Prana Doha 2022 9.5’ x 2.5’ water color on water color paper with thread

Washes of blues, made of cobalt, ultramarines, cerulean, on eight sheets of water color paper. Wash after wash, the paper spoke to me, with full arm brush strokes across the multiple sheets nested side by side, the energy of my life and my experiences were fluid and rich reaching through the brush onto the paper.

Make it two sided. My intuition led me after about 6, 7 washes, I lost track. Each was so meditative and luxurious as the richness of the color deepened. Flipping the sheets over, and starting again with the white sheets, which called to be covered in more washes of blues. This was all over the course of 4 days, in Doha at VCU Qatar, in the graduate department, where I had become welcomed as a visiting scholar for three months. At the time the 14 VCUQ MFA students and faculty were in Spain at a workshop, and the week overlapped fall break. The school was nearly empty, it was an amazing space to work and be. While my previous pieces had called to be cut into strips, woven, and sewn. This piece called to be cut into strips and sewn side by side by side. Blue thread wove it all together, and the sewing machine, the paper, and the thread lead the way of the shape. It was gorgeous. But called for the yellow thread to come and join it - in a flow line, energy lines, source lines, lines of God shining through the blue until the thread was gone - about 6/7 full lines.
